Milwaukee, Wis. (2/25/13) — Maria Andrade, a supervisor in Integrated Family Services’ Intensive In-Home Services area, has won a 2013 Secretary’s Caring for Kids Award from the Department of Children and Families. As part of Social Worker Month, which is March, DCF is honoring the contributions of social workers throughout Wisconsin.
Maria was chosen because of her “extraordinary commitment to the children and families she serves and because her dedicated service to the social work profession has impacted the lives of many in her community,” according to the DCF notification. She will receive the award from DCF Secretary Eloise Anderson at an awards ceremony on March 4 at the State Capitol.
Maria was nominated by her supervisor, Lisa Vega, who said in her nomination that Maria works virtually nonstop to do whatever she can to give back to the child welfare community. Lisa noted that last year Maria co-chaired a toy drive that resulted in gifts being provided for 1,800 kids in child welfare. She also volunteers frequently to help other areas of St. Aemilian-Lakeside, such as foster care and Independent Living Services (ILS), and “she does it all quietly. Maria does not do things for recognition; she just wants to help.”
Lisa also noted in her nomination that the day after her birthday last year, Maria threw a Packers party at her home to raise money for ILS. She told everyone to NOT bring her a birthday gift, but rather that a donation of at least $25, in cash or a gift card, was required for attendance. She raised over $300 – because she thought it was the right thing to do.
